DERMAL FILLERS

Dermal fillers are made from cross-linked hyaluronic acid, a molecule that is found naturally in your body. By using fillers with different characteristics we can achieve various results, smoothing fine lines and correcting age-related volume loss.

How Dermal Fillers Work

As we age, our skin loses hydration, elasticity, and collagen, while fat and bone volume naturally diminish. These changes contribute to sagging, hollowing, and the formation of lines and wrinkles. In the middle and lower third of the face, dermal fillers can help to restore structure, replenish lost volume, and rejuvenate facial contours.

Natural, Subtle Enhancement
Used with precision and care, dermal fillers can help you look fresher and healthier—enhancing your natural features without looking overdone. My approach to aesthetics is all about balance: refreshing and renewing your appearance safely while maintaining a look that is authentically you.

These are the lines that run from the corner of your nose down to your mouth.

A combination of loss of volume and fat to the cheeks, and bone loss to the upper jaw means this is one of the first areas to show signs of ageing. We can use dermal filler directly in this area, alone, or in combination with other treatments, to improve the appearance of these folds.

nasolabial folds

Whether you’ve asked about cheek treatment, or are concerned about lines and folds lower down on your face, I will often look to your cheeks initially. A young face shows a ‘triangle of youth’ which connects the cheeks to the chin. As we age, this triangle inverts and the lower part of your face becomes heavier, sags and shows folds and lines.

The most natural way to rejuvenate is to think through the reversal of this ageing process. In restoring lost volume to cheeks through dermal filler treatment, we are looking to lift the triangle and take some weight away from the lower face.

This treatment can be used in combination with other lower face dermal filler procedures.

These are the lines that run from the corner of your mouth down towards the lower jaw. Similar in cause to the nasolabial lines, they can also be treated in a similar way. We can use dermal filler directly in this area, alone, or in combination with other treatments, to improve their appearance.

My favoured dermal filler ranges are Teoxane Teosyal® and Allergan Juvederm®. These ranges are not only EU CE certified, they have also gained FDA approval. The US system of FDA approval is a more rigorous approach to the approval of medical devices, giving an extra layer of scrutiny and confidence in the products. They are dermal filler ranges that are beautiful to use as an injector and are highly researched, significantly in terms of safety and efficacy.

The Teosyal® and Juvederm® ranges of dermal fillers blend beautifully under the skin and integrate with your tissue, before being broken down naturally by your body over time.

Dermal filler before and afters

  • What can lip filler do for me?
Lip filler is designed to enhance the shape, volume, and definition of your lips. It can be used to achieve a fuller, more balanced appearance, smooth out fine lines around the mouth, and even improve overall facial harmony. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your aesthetic goals and design a treatment plan tailored to you.
  • I don't want anyone to notice I've had lip filler, can the result be super-natural?
Absolutely. Many practitioners promote a 'natural' result. But the term 'natural' means different things to different people. Some may want an effect that only they can notice, but they feel good about. Others would feel comfortable with friends and family seeing a difference but not a stranger in the street. And others want an effect that's within the natural proportions of their facial features. Consultation for lip filler procedures is vital to ensure you achieve the result you're looking for.
  • Who should not have lip filler?
Lip fillers may not be suitable for everyone. For example, individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain medical conditions—including autoimmune diseases—might be advised against filler treatments. Additionally, if you have had treatment with another filler brand within the last 6 months, we may recommend waiting before proceeding. We’ll review your full medical history during your consultation to determine if you’re a good candidate. Your dental status is important. If you are having dental treatment that affects your tooth position or lip support, or active dental infections, I'll also recommend waiting until your dental status is stable and healthy.
  • How do I know how much filler I need?
During your consultation, we’ll evaluate your lip shape, volume, and overall facial proportions. This personalized assessment helps us determine the right amount of filler needed to achieve a natural and balanced result. We’ll also discuss your desired outcome, whether that’s subtle enhancement or a more dramatic transformation.
  • What does the procedure feel like?
Lip filler injections are performed using very fine needles. Prior to treatment, a topical numbing cream is typically applied to ensure your comfort. You might feel a brief pinch or mild pressure during the injections, and many patients experience a slight tingling or numbness due to the anesthetic. Your comfort is a top priority, and we’ll discuss any concerns during your consultation. If you need a more profound anaesthetic for the procedure I can administer local anaesthetic in a similar manner to dental anaesthetic.
  • How should I prepare for my lip filler appointment?
I recommend avoiding alcohol, blood-thinning medications, or supplements for a few days before your treatment to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling. If possible you should come to your appointment with a clean face. Additionally, if you are deemed high risk for a post-procedure herpetic outbreak you might need to take antiviral medication to reduce the risk of this occurring. Please let me know if you suffer from cold sores frequently.
  • What does it feel like?
Injections are performed using very fine needles. You may feel a brief pinch or slight pressure at the time of injection. Many dermal fillers also contain a local anaesthetic, which can cause a mild tingling or numbness. For areas like the lips, we often use a topical anaesthetic cream to enhance comfort; however, if you find lip treatments particularly sensitive, we may opt for a local anaesthetic similar to those used in dental procedures. We’ll discuss the best approach for you during your consultation.
  • How long does the treatment take?
Most dermal filler procedures are quick and typically take between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated.
  • What aftercare should I follow?
After your lip filler treatment, you will receive specific aftercare instructions. Generally, it’s important to avoid: Rubbing or massaging the treated area Strenuous exercise or activities that may increase blood flow to the lips for at least 24 hours Excessive sun or heat exposure Additionally, you may be advised to avoid certain skincare products and not to undergo other facial treatments for a short period. Following these guidelines helps minimize bruising and swelling while ensuring optimal results.
  • How quickly will I see results?
You’ll notice an immediate improvement in your lip volume and contour right after treatment. However, some swelling is normal and may temporarily exaggerate the initial effect. Typically, the swelling will subside within a few days. Full product integration takes up to 4 weeks before revealing your final, natural-looking results.
  • Will I be able to resume my normal activities immediately after treatment?
Yes, most patients can return to their normal activities right away. However, you should avoid strenuous exercise and activities for at least 24 hours.
  • How long does the effect last?
While hyaluronic acid-based fillers can persist in the tissue for an extended period, the cosmetic effect may diminish sooner. The duration of results depends on the specific product used, the treated area, and individual factors. Manufacturers provide estimated durations for each product, and we’ll help you choose the best option for your needs. For more detailed information on longevity, please read my blog here
  • Can lip filler be combined with other cosmetic treatments?
Yes, lip filler can be effectively combined with other cosmetic treatments, such as anti-wrinkle injections for the perioral area or skin rejuvenation procedures, to create a comprehensive facial enhancement plan. During your consultation, we’ll discuss the best combination of treatments to meet your overall aesthetic goals.
